Frances D’Aintree | Artist Jeweller

Based in Munich, born in Johannesburg, I am a South African artist jeweller/goldsmith/lecturer, who works passionately, using traditional and contemporary gold-and silversmithing techniques, to create mainly wearable or useable objects in precious metals. Rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, pins/brooches, as well as spoons, tableware and candlesticks form the major part of my portfolio.

My designs are influenced by my early formation as a fine artist at the University of the Witwatersrand, and are generally symbolic, talismanic, amuletic, iconic, unique, one-off or bespoke, using gold, silver, platinum, or a combination of metals, precious stones and porcelain.

Africa, Europe, the ancient and contemporary world, visual art, music, design, and nature are among my design inspirations.

Dividing my year between Munich, Johannesburg, Durban and Italy, my mind constantly absorbs, evaluates and stores images, emotions, designs, shapes and colours which re-emerge in my jewels.

Lecturing/teaching fulfills my desire to bring out individual creativity in my fellow men.
